Empowering surgeons with a new perception

by a plug-and-play system that listens to instrument-tissue interactions and turns them into perceivable and valuable feedback

Challenge

The lack of sensory information in minimally invasive surgery.

During minimally invasive procedures, the surgeons‘ haptic information is reduced by 30 to 100 % compared to open surgery. This can limit identification of anatomic structures, cause longer procedure times and increases the patients’ risk of injury. Moreover, many minimal invasive procedures, like surgical access, are entirely blind, i.e., without imaging support – causing discomfort and stress for the surgeon. Adverse events such as the injury of organs or vessels can lead to life-threatening complications or the conversion to open surgery. Besides an increased clinical trauma and prolonged recovery time for the patient, this leads to preventable costs for the healthcare system.

Acoustic Surgineering

Creating a new perception by listening to instrument-tissue interactions.

Any interaction between tissue and interventional instrument causes vibrations, which propagate along the rigid instrument shaft. SURAG “listens” to those vibrations. It is a passive, plug-and-play sensing solution that provides valuable feedback information to the surgeon in real-time. Within seconds, it is attached (and removed) at the end of a standard instrument outside the patient’s body and without direct contact to human tissue. This allows the technology to be used in various applications such as interventional needles, laparoscopic instruments, or surgical robotics. SURAG provides supplementary sensory information and aims to enable surgeons to perform precise and safe interventions – for the patient’s good.
